Kid X On How His Latest Single “iRoof” Came About. Kid X has opened up about the unlikely journey behind his latest single, “iRoof”, revealing that the track almost never made it into the conversation when his team began searching for the right song to introduce his next chapter.

Speaking to SA Hip Hop Mag, the rapper explained that “iRoof” was not initially viewed as the obvious choice from his stash. In fact, Kid X believed he had several other records that were stronger contenders for release.

The song’s journey began last year after record executive Umphilo reached out to Kid X with a clear request: he wanted the rapper back in the studio to create music that captured the distinctive essence that had made audiences fall in love with his sound.

According to Kid X, Umphilo believed there was a gap in the current South African music landscape and felt the rapper could fill it by returning with the style that had become synonymous with him.

Umphilo facilitated the studio session, even arranging an Uber for Kid X while the rapper was experiencing problems with his car. Once they got into the studio, the record began taking shape almost organically.

Kid X revealed that Umphilo himself contributed to the song, including the opening pre-chorus heard at the beginning of “iRoof”.

The session also came with a bigger conversation about what Kid X’s return to music should represent. Umphilo told him about a conversation he had with a veteran figure in the South African music industry, who believed Kid X needed more than simply another song if he was going to make his return meaningful.

The advice was to treat the comeback as a statement and create a moment around it rather than approaching it as just another music release.

That idea began taking shape in the studio. While the producer worked on the beat, Umphilo developed the feel of the pre-chorus, while another person in the session came up with the hook.

For Kid X, the process felt almost too easy.

“I felt like it fell on my lap. It was a gift, bro. It was literally like manna from heaven,” he recalled.

“All I needed to do was show up.”

Despite how naturally the song came together, “iRoof” did not immediately become the single. Kid X and his team sat with the record for a while as he worked through issues surrounding his distribution channels and the broader direction of his release strategy.

Rather than rushing the song out, he decided to step back and make more music.

He eventually recorded a number of additional songs as the project began to take shape. Once the project started nearing completion, the focus shifted towards finding the right single to introduce the new body of work.

That was when “iRoof” found itself back in the frame.

Kid X explained that the team held a listening session where they played through the music they had accumulated. As he went through the catalogue, he realised there was one particular song he had not played for the team.

That song was “iRoof”.

“I was really trying to think back to, okay, what song haven’t I played?” he said. “And then I stumbled across iRoof. Oh, once, this is one, let me toss it in.”

The reaction was immediate.

From the moment the team heard the track, they knew they had found something special. Kid X said some members of the team had not even heard the song before that session, making their reaction all the more significant.

“And from the minute they heard it, they were like, ‘Oh, this is our first joint,’” he recalled.

What started as a song Kid X almost forgot to play ultimately became the record chosen to introduce his latest era.

For the rapper, “iRoof” therefore represents more than a track that happened to survive the recording process. It is the product of a series of unexpected moments, from an unsolicited studio invitation and contributions from people around him to a delayed release and a last-minute decision to play the song for his team.

In the end, the record that Kid X initially believed could easily have remained buried in his stash was the one that convinced everyone it was time for him to step back into the spotlight.
