Many readers will be familiar with The Ligerians band from the Loire in France, a committed roots reggae band responsible for the Soul Nurse label. Over the last few years they have been working with Nadia McAnuff, the daughter of legendary reggae singer Winston McAnuff, the “Electric Dread” and composer of the song Malcolm X, who has had a revived career in France. When Winston dropped in on one of Nadia’s sessions in 2024, the seeds of this lovely album were born.

Whilst the French band seemingly effortlessly hit the rich variety of roots reggae approaches the ten songs here require (try a track like Glory Of Dada, the band strongly recalling the late 70s sound of The Twinkle Brothers), the front line vocalists underline the importance of the McAnuff family connection. It was road-tested last year and only became stronger. Winston himself provides the lyrics for four songs including the inspirational title track with its very African feel, daughter Nadia a further two, son Kush two more, and the closing song is a cover of Freddy McKay’s 1973 Our Rendezvous.

The scene is set right from the off though – opener Be Careful was written by another of Winston’s sons, Matthew McAnuff, and is here performed beautifully in tribute to Matthew who was killed in a street fight in 2012. The power pervades this set, as lead vocals and harmonies swap around but the commitment to positivity is consistent throughout – as Winston himself sings, Bad Time Don’t Last
