Minister of Home Affairs seek to expand BPD’s K-9 unit

By Zoila Palma:  Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat has indicated that the Ministry is seeking the expand the Belize Police Department’s K-9 unit.

“ And right now I’m looking at the K-9 Unit, and we only have two dogs nationally, and I believe we should have at least 20, so we will work on that. I’ve been looking at other things within the force. We’ve been looking at the infrastructure, which is for us the easiest part of it. So, we did a national analysis of all the substations that we have, and we did an evaluation as to what is needed to bring them up to an acceptable level. That report has been sent to Ministry of Finance already, sent to the Prime Minister. And then we’re looking at vehicles,” Espat said.

Espat says that the Ministry is also looking at acquiring ATV so that the police are able to reach urban areas.

“We just signed the contract to roof the Raccoon Street station, and we’ll be doing another part to do the cladding of it. That’s by MIDH. We just had a bid out for purchasing of weapons; we are awaiting that bid to come in. So, the transfer of personnel is just a part of what the Police Department needs.

There’s a lot of work that has to be put in, and I think we have very good police officers who are frustrated,” Espat added.

Espat says that the Ministry continues to seek ways to improve the Belize Police Department.
