A Namibian cheetah in India died on Monday, four years after he was transported to the country to help repopulate the wild cheetah population.
Gaurav, as the Indian authorities named him, was one of the first cheetahs introduced to India as part of a group of eight cheetahs sent by Namibia.
After Gaurav’s death, only two Namibian cheetahs remain in India.
The ten-year-old cheetah was sent to India’s Kuno National Park in 2022 as part of Project Cheetah.
Indian media reports confirm that Gaurav was found weak and dehydrated by park officials ten days ago. The officials brought the cheetah in for treatment and confirmed his death on Monday evening.
“On examination, he was found to be markedly weak, with visible muscle wasting and severe dehydration. Immediate systemic and supportive treatment was provided, following which he was shifted to Palpur and kept in a quarantine boma for close observation and further management,” a park official told The Economic Times.
According to Indian media reports, the national park now has 51 cheetahs, 36 of which were born in India.
