*Marvel made a major splash at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, debuting a new trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday” that put Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom front and center as the ultimate threat to Earth’s mightiest heroes. Watch the clip above.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo were on the ground for Disney’s presentation, joined by Downey and Chris Evans, as the studio laid out its vision for a December 18, 2026 release. The film represents the Russo brothers stepping back into the MCU universe, a return that was first teased at ComicCon 2024 when both “Doomsday” and its follow-up “Avengers: Secret Wars” were unveiled together.
Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely penned the screenplay for the film, which stands as both the 39th MCU entry and the fifth chapter in the Avengers franchise. “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to follow on December 17, 2027.
The story picks up fourteen months after “Thunderbolts” (2025), assembling an unprecedented coalition of heroes — spanning the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and original X-Men — all standing between the world and Doctor Doom.
During a livestream event in March 2025, Marvel confirmed the return of several beloved Fox Marvel characters, with Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer reprising their roles as Charles Xavier, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Cyclops, and Beast respectively. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach round out the Fantastic Four side of the equation.
The full ensemble also features Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Winston Duke, and many others.
Taking to Instagram ahead of the CinemaCon reveal, the Russo brothers paid tribute to the role that defined their Marvel legacy. They called Captain America “The character that changed our lives” and “The story that brought us all here together,” closing with the line “It was always going to come back to this…”
