Niamey Power Plant: Algeria Expands Its Development Footprint in the Sahel Through Niger’s Largest Energy Project

Niger is preparing to inaugurate a new 40-megawatt power plant in the capital, Niamey, in what is being described as one of the most significant examples of Algerian-Nigerien development cooperation in recent years. The project highlights Algeria’s growing role in supporting infrastructure and energy development across the Sahel region.

The official inauguration is scheduled for June 3, 2026, only weeks after construction began, a timeline that Nigerien officials have cited as evidence of the speed and effectiveness of cooperation between the two countries.

The project carries particular importance as Niger continues to face significant challenges in its electricity sector, including limited domestic generation capacity and growing energy demand. According to Nigerien officials, the power plant was launched following directives issued by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in early May, calling for its completion within three months.

However, engineering teams from Algeria’s Sonelgaz completed the project in less than two months, an achievement widely viewed as exceptional given the scale and technical complexity of the undertaking.

Omar Mokhtar Al-Ansari, a member of the National Political Bureau of Niger’s Democratic and Republican Renewal Party, praised the speed of implementation, describing the project as a demonstration of Algeria’s ability to transform political commitments into tangible development achievements.

He said the rapid completion of a project of this magnitude reflects the expertise and professionalism of Algerian technical teams and reinforces the credibility of the partnership between the two neighboring countries.
