*Zohran Mamdani will not attend the upcoming Met Gala, a decision that departs from a long-established pattern of New York City mayors appearing at the high-profile fundraiser, Page Six reports.

Mamdani, 34, and first lady Rama Duwaji were both invited to the May 4 event but have opted out. According to a source, “He’s not coming,” adding, “And it would be foolish if he did … can you imagine? It goes against everything he believes in.”

The gala, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, is being supported this year by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez-Bezos as lead donors and honorary co-chairs. Some in New York’s social scene believe the mayor should reconsider. One insider described the event as “such a New York institution” and “a very New York moment,” emphasizing its cultural significance within the city.

Attendance by sitting mayors has historically been common at the gala. Eric Adams appeared at the event in 2022 during his first year in office, while Bill de Blasio attended in 2021. Michael Bloomberg, who served from 2002 to 2013, has remained a frequent attendee even after leaving office.

This year’s gala will be co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. The theme, “Costume Art,” curated by Andrew Bolton, will examine the connection between clothing and the human body.

Bolton explained the concept, saying, “I wanted to focus on the centrality of the dressed body within the museum, connecting artistic representations of the body with fashion as an embodied art form.” The exhibition will open on May 10, 2026, and run through January 10, 2027.
