THE Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ontario’s LaSalle Police Service have taken over the investigation into an arson in Windsor that they believe is linked to the murder of Nancy Grewal from Windsor Police Service.

They’re also looking for video footage from locations around Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh in March.

Grewal, 45, of Windsor was stabbed in the 2400-block of Todd Lane in LaSalle on March 3. She was transported by Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

CTV News reported at the time that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) identified Grewal as a personal support worker (PSW), saying she was working alone the night she was stabbed. The union couldn’t confirm if she was attending to a client at their home at the time.

LaSalle Police Chief Michael Pearce said in a statement: “Investigators are confident this was not a random act of violence. Ms. Grewal’s murder is being investigated as an intentional act against her. All information is being considered. While we recognize the significant public interest in this case, we will not share information that will compromise the investigation, including leads, tips, and investigative avenues.”

Media in India has been highlighting her case, speculating if her death was the result of her being outspoken. The Tribune newspaper said: “Grewal had gained attention online for her commentary on the India–Canada diplomatic tensions and criticisms of Khalistani supporters.”

It said: “Her Facebook also indicated she originally belonged to Ludhiana and was living in Calgary, Alberta before relocating to the Windsor / LaSalle region.”

Her mother, Shinderpal Kaur, in Jalandhar, Punjab in India made all kinds of allegations to the media regarding threats to her daughter.

The OPP said that early on November 8, 2025, Windsor police went to her home to respond to a report of a deliberately set fire.

Surveillance video from her home shows a van stopping in front of Grewal’s home. A man carrying a gas can emerges from the vehicle, pours liquid onto Grewal’s front porch and then sets it on fire. He runs back to the vehicle and takes off.

Police said in a release: “As the arson and homicide involve the same victim, LPS, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, has taken carriage of the arson investigation to determine any potential links between the two incidents.”

They added: “Whether the individual depicted in the released surveillance video had any involvement in the homicide remains unknown.”

Investigators are seeking video footage from the following locations:

* Windsor: St. Clair Avenue between Tecumseh Road West and Algonquin Street on Monday, March 2, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

* LaSalle: Todd Lane between Highway 401 and Elmdale Avenue on Tuesday, March 3,  between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

* Tecumseh: 8th Concession Road, Tecumseh between Baseline Road and Highway 401 on Tuesday, March 3, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Video footage can be submitted at bit.ly/LaSalle_Homicide. Anyone with information related to this investigation is urged to contact the OPP at 1‑888‑310‑1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑222‑8477 (TIPS) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
