Osona in darkness after weekend rains

Residents of the Osona Village estate near Okahandja on Monday entered a second day without electricity following a power failure that started on Saturday evening.

The outage began in isolated sections of the estate during rainfall before the entire community lost power. By Monday morning, the supply had not been restored.

The situation has resulted in the loss of perishable food items and hindered the care of infants.

“We had to go to a fast-food outlet this morning for boiling water to feed my baby her formula,” one resident posted on social media.

Another community member notes that “deep freezers are defrosting,” while others expressed concern over the safety of those requiring refrigerated medication.

The Osona Property Management Company (OPMC) issued an ‘urgent notice’ on Sunday, stating that a technical team and the Namibia Power Corporation were “attending to the matter” and that “every effort is being made to restore the power.”

However, residents claim that communication from management has been insufficient. Some note that previous communication methods, such as SMS updates, were not used.

Efforts by Nampa to reach OPMC for further comment were unsuccessful, as the company’s official contact number has been unreachable since Sunday.

This incident follows a pattern of recurring power failures at Osona, which frequently occur during the rainy season. Despite a N$11-million grid upgrade in 2022 intended to stabilise supply for the growing population, residents describe the persistent outages as an “endless issue” with no permanent solution in sight.

As of Monday morning, there was no confirmed timeline for the restoration of the electricity supply.
