Redefining the Sound of Africa: Nissi’s Rise
Nigerian singer-songwriter Nissi has been unveiled as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Artist for the month of October, spotlighting her as one of the voices reshaping the sound and story of modern African music.
Known for her versatility, the 31-year-old combines Afrobeats, funk and soul in her music. She also has a penchant for integrating art and technology in her work.
Nissi, who is a younger sister to Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy, has also achieved notable success in engineering and design. She was part of the team involved in the development of the Bentley Bentayga SUV, making her one of the few Black women to have contributed to a major automotive project. In addition to her artistic and technical work, Nissi continues to advocate for women in technology and innovation.
Speaking about her selection, Nissi said being part of Spotify’s EQUAL programme represents more than individual recognition.
“Being part of the EQUAL programme means being part of a movement that’s levelling the playing field for women,” she said. “I am beyond honoured to be championing a campaign that amplifies our voices.”
Nissi cites artists such as Fela Kuti, Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba, Asa, and Awilo Longomba among her influences, describing her sound as “nostalgic yet modern.”
Spotify’s EQUAL programme supports female artists, giving them a global platform through playlists, content and the EQUAL hub. EQUAL has added more than 6,900 female artists to the EQUAL playlist and has supported over 1,000 ambassadors in their home countries. Through EQUAL, Spotify hopes to inspire change and promote a more inclusive music landscape across the globe.
Launched in April 2021, EQUAL Africa is a key component of Spotify’s EQUAL Hub, aimed at promoting gender equity in the global music industry through curated playlists, specialised content hubs, and collaborative efforts. Over the years, the initiative has shone the spotlight on African artistes such as Yemi Alade, Ayra Starr, Aṣa, Fave, Gyakie, Brazy, Njerae, Somi, and Amaarae.
