PM orders Audit of Ministry of Defence during Mira’s tenure

By Breaking Belize News Staff:   Prime Minister John Briceño has announced that he will request an audit of the Ministry of Defence covering the period from 2020 to 2025, when Oscar Mira served as Minister of Defence.

The Prime Minister said he has spoken to the Financial Secretary to engage the Auditor General to examine the ministry’s operations during the period in question.

Speaking on the matter, Briceño said the audit would seek to determine whether government received value for money and whether procurement procedures were properly followed.

“Today, I’m speaking with the financial secretary to ask the auditor general to do an audit in to that period in question, to ensure that there was value for money, and that the procurement process was followed properly and to get a report.”

The Prime Minister stressed that he would await the findings before making any decisions. “I don’t want to prejudice the report. Based on the report we can act.”

He added, “let me take a look at the report then I will be in a better position to decide what to do next.”

Briceño also acknowledged the concerns surrounding business dealings involving the Mira family and the Belize Defence Force, noting that the relationship predates the current administration.

“It puts me in a very uncomfortable position but without really getting into defending anybody what I found is that the Mira’s have been in business with the BDF from as far back as 2005 so even during the UDP days they were selling to the BDF, maybe not to this extent, I don’t know but it certainly is a lot for you to be able to question.”

The Prime Minister further revealed that he has spoken with the Cabinet Secretary and will request the appointment of a new board for RECONDEV, which is currently chaired by Brian Mira, the brother of Minister Oscar.
