Police await CCTV after 77-year-old woman killed crossing Philip Goldson Highway

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are awaiting surveillance footage as they investigate Thursday’s fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of 77-year-old Burrell Boom resident Erlene Gillett.

The accident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on August 27 in the vicinity of Mile 2 on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Police say Gillett was attempting to cross the highway when she was struck by a Dodge Caravan being driven by a man whose name has not been released.

The vehicle has since been impounded as part of the investigation, while a sample was obtained from the driver and he was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

During Friday’s police press briefing, Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith said investigators have received assurances that surveillance footage from an establishment in the area may have captured the accident. That footage is expected to help police establish the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether other motorists may have stopped to allow Gillett to cross.

Smith urged pedestrians to use designated crossing areas where available, but stressed that motorists also have a responsibility to remain alert, even when travelling within the speed limit.

Local media reports say Gillett was crossing the highway in front of My Lights when she was struck by a southbound minivan.

The investigation continues.
