A dramatic exchange of gunfire on the corner of Chaussee Rd and St Louis Street Castries on Tuesday has triggered an attempted murder investigation after police officers reportedly came under heavy fire during a confrontation with an armed suspect now on the run.
Saint Lucia Daily Post has confirmed with senior officials within the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force that officers attached to the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit (GNFU) were involved in the incident, which unfolded in the city and sent bystanders scrambling for safety.
While police hierarchy acknowledged the confrontation, officials said investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to sources close to the investigation, officers involved in the operation later filed formal reports indicating that attempts were allegedly made on their lives during the exchange of gunfire, prompting the launch of an attempted murder probe.
An eyewitness described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out, forcing civilians in the area to run for cover while the confrontation unfolded between the suspect and law enforcement officers.
The suspect reportedly escaped the scene despite the intense gunfire and remains at large.
