Police Identify Man Charged in Killing of Beloved Athlete Darrion Roberts

Police have released the identity of the individual charged in connection with the killing of beloved athlete, coach and cultural figure Jevauny Darrion Kimani Roberts, marking a significant breakthrough in one of Saint Lucia’s most closely followed homicide investigations.

The accused as 35-year-old Rufinus Edwin, also known as “Yanick,” of Bagatelle, Marchand.

According to investigators, Edwin was arrested on July 1, 2026, during a joint operation involving the Major Crimes Unit, the Special Patrol Team and the Special Services Unit. He was formally charged with Roberts’ murder on July 5 before appearing in the First District Court in Castries, where he was remanded into custody until August 11, 2026.

The charge follows weeks of investigation into the death of Roberts, whose lifeless body was discovered at his Sunny Acres residence on May 22, 2026.

A Vincentian national who had made Saint Lucia his home for several years, Roberts was widely respected across the country’s sporting and cultural communities. He represented Saint Lucia in men’s volleyball and also served as a tennis and athletics coach, athlete and official. His involvement in dance and other cultural activities further cemented his reputation as a well-known and admired figure.

His death sparked an outpouring of grief across the island, with thousands gathering at a candlelight vigil to celebrate his life and mourn his passing.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has thanked members of the public for their cooperation throughout the investigation, noting that information provided by citizens played a significant role in advancing the case and helping investigators deliver answers to Roberts’ loved ones.
