R25,000 Raised in Under 24 Hours to Wrap Children in Warmth

This week, the warmth of Ubuntu proved stronger than the storm, as South Africans stood together to turn R80 donations into R25,000 for blankets that will bring peaceful sleep for children in desperate need.

Western Cape, South Africa (14 May 2026) – While the storms of the past week have brought displacement and unease, they have also sparked something truly special. Once again, South Africans have stood together to showcase what they are best known for: Ubuntu.

This spirit has come alive in every cold and flooded corner of the country. People have rushed to the aid of families, animals, and those left vulnerable without a place to call home.

And when The Angel Network called for help, South Africa answered.

On Monday, the charity launched an appeal for its blanket drive. They asked for donations of just R80 to provide a warm blanket, a better night’s sleep, and a vital reminder to a child in need that someone truly cares.

“With this storm upon us, many of us are reaching for extra layers, warm drinks, and cosy blankets. But for countless children in our communities, winter brings something very different – long, cold nights without the basic comfort of warmth,” shares Glynne Wolman, Founder of The Angel Network.

The response was overwhelming. In less than 24 hours, donations poured in, raising R25,000!

“What happened this week reminded us again of the incredible power of people coming together,” Glynne tells Good Things Guy.

“The Angel Network Western Cape sent out a simple WhatsApp to a few groups during the horrific storms, appealing for donations of blankets. Within minutes, that message had been shared hundreds of times across countless groups, and suddenly the donations started pouring in.”

R80 may not seem like much on its own, but that’s the power of the collective. Thanks to these heartfelt contributions, blankets will reach children who have endured the biting chill of the night. Their shivers will be replaced with comfort, allowing them to finally experience a warm, peaceful sleep.

Just as heartwarming, some of the women the Network has empowered through its sewing skills development programme have also joined the movement by sewing blankets towards the cause.

This is the spirit of human kindness alive and at its best. As a grateful Glynne puts it:

“For many of us with electricity, heaters, electric blankets and hot water bottles, it may seem like “just another blanket.” But for someone with nothing, a blanket is so much more than that. It is warmth. Comfort. Dignity. A sense of safety. A reminder that someone sees them, cares about them and wants to help. Sometimes changing a life starts with something as simple as sharing a message.”

A message you’ve answered so beautifully, Mzansi – thank you!
