African Champions Sundowns’ Hot Streak Continues Against RB Leipzig in Pretoria

Fresh from lifting the CAF Champions League trophy, Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to defeat German side RB Leipzig 3-1 in Pretoria.

Pretoria, South Africa (02 June 2026) – Freshly crowned African champions Mamelodi Sundowns continued their celebrations in style on Friday night, producing a spirited comeback to defeat German side RB Leipzig 3-1 in front of a packed and lively crowd at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

After falling behind in the first half, Masandawana responded with the confidence and quality that have made them one of the continent’s dominant forces. The Tshwane giants turned the match on its head with an impressive second-half display, much to the delight of the home supporters.

The victory added another memorable chapter to what has already been a remarkable season for Sundowns, who recently secured their second CAF Champions League title to reaffirm their status as African football royalty.

The clash formed part of RB Leipzig’s South African tour and gave local fans a rare opportunity to see one of Germany’s top clubs in action on home soil. But by the final whistle, it was Sundowns who had stolen the show, matching their European opponents and ultimately finishing the stronger of the two sides.

The evening was about more than just football. Supporters were treated to a festive atmosphere that celebrated South African sport, culture and entertainment, with a vibrant halftime performance from spinning star Samkeliso “Sam Sam” Thubane adding to the occasion.

The event also came shortly after Bafana Bafana midfielder and Sundowns star Teboho Mokoena was announced as part of the Red Bull athlete family, further highlighting the growing international recognition of South African football talent.

The night served as another reminder of just how far South African football has come. And for Sundowns, it was the perfect way to celebrate being crowned kings of Africa.
