A growing effort to tackle one of the Caribbean’s most overlooked public health challenges will take centre stage this month as the St. Lucia Arthritis & Lupus Association and the Saint Lucia Cancer Society join forces for a regional discussion focused on men’s health, mental wellbeing and the support systems many say are still lacking.
The virtual forum, “BEYOND BORDERS: Strong Men, Strong Support Systems,” will be held on Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom as part of Men’s Health Month. The collaboration brings together two organizations representing people living with chronic illnesses to encourage more open conversations around the physical, emotional and psychological challenges men often face while managing long-term health conditions.
Organizers say the discussion is intended to move beyond traditional health presentations by creating an interactive space where men, caregivers, healthcare professionals and families can share experiences, ask questions and explore practical ways to build stronger support networks.
The panel will feature Dr. Stephen King, Phil Leon and James Perineau, who will examine issues ranging from mental health and stress management to caregiving, social isolation and the importance of community support for men living with conditions such as arthritis, lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and cancer.
The event is open to participants throughout the Caribbean and beyond, including individuals living with chronic illnesses, caregivers, fathers, healthcare providers, advocacy groups and members of the wider public.
According to organizers, meaningful improvements in men’s health require more than medical treatment alone. They say stronger outcomes begin with stronger conversations, stronger families and stronger communities willing to support men before health challenges become crises.
