Facing a near-impossible rescue deep inside a Tygerhof storm drain, Cape Town’s incredible rescue teams refused to give up until doggo “Beks” was safely extracted and out of harm’s way.
Cape Town, South Africa (25 May 2026) – It is often said that cats are the curious ones, but dogs can be just as inquisitive, as one little guy recently proved by landing himself in a very tight spot.
Stuck deep inside a stormwater drain in Tygerhof, a dog named Beks was nearly impossible to reach. However, rescue teams refused to give up on her, working tirelessly throughout Saturday afternoon.
Saving her required a complex, highly coordinated operation with multiple teams putting their heads together. The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) of SA responded immediately to the call, partnering with the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service to try and get Beks safely out.
“Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the situation, additional assistance was needed to open sections of the drain system in order to reach her safely.”
But after all the exceptional and strategic teamwork to navigate and access the narrow space, a shaken, wide-eyed Beks made it out!
“Beks is now safely on her way to be medically assessed, and tonight both she and her owner will finally be able to sleep peacefully knowing she is safe,” AWS happily confirmed in a post.
Heartfelt appreciation goes out to every single person involved – for your teamwork, dedication and determination to never give up on Beks.
“A massive THANK YOU to the City of Cape Town and JP Smith for making this possible and helping turn what felt like an impossible rescue mission into a successful one.”
And at the end of the day, it is the public’s support that allows AWS to respond to all kinds of emergencies and rescue missions, no matter how challenging the situation may be.

“Together, we can continue being there for animals in need when they need us most.”
