Saldivar accuses Mira family of benefiting from contracts, Mira fires back

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A bitter political confrontation has erupted between former Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar and current Area Representative and Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira, with both men trading sharp public accusations over politics, government contracts and personal records.

The latest dispute began when Saldivar published a lengthy social media post criticizing Mira and members of his family.

In the statement, Saldivar reflected on the controversy that ended his political career, noting that he had been criticized by voters and members of his own party for accepting campaign contributions from a businessman who was later convicted of tax-related crimes in the United States.

Saldivar then turned his attention to the Mira family, alleging that relatives connected to the minister have benefited from various government contracts since the current administration took office. He questioned whether politics had become a business enterprise for the family and called for greater scrutiny of public contracts and procurement decisions.

The former minister also claimed that information was continuing to emerge regarding supply contracts allegedly awarded to businesses connected to relatives of the minister.

No court, government agency or investigative body has publicly determined that Oscar Mira, his relatives, or any associated businesses engaged in wrongdoing. The allegations remain claims made by a political opponent.

Mira later responded with a statement defending his record and launching a counterattack against Saldivar.

“The people of Belmopan have supported me based on results, not talk,” Mira said.

The minister pointed to infrastructure improvements, housing projects, access to health and education services, and other developments as evidence of his performance in office.

Mira also described Saldivar as a failed politician and accused him of attempting to drag others into political controversy.

The escalating exchange has become one of the most heated political disputes currently unfolding on Belizean social media and is expected to generate further debate among supporters of both men.
