San Ignacio and Santa Elena records highest inflation rate at 5.3 Percent

By Zoila Palma: Consumers in San Ignacio and Santa Elena faced the highest increase in prices among Belize’s municipalities in July 2026, recording an inflation rate of 5.3 percent, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The rate was significantly higher than the national inflation rate of 4.1 percent.

The SIB reported that residents in the municipality experienced above-average price increases across several categories of goods and services.

Among the areas recording higher costs were passenger transportation, rent, food and non-alcoholic beverages, medical services, restaurant and café services, clothing and footwear, cigarettes and recreational services.

Other municipalities also recorded inflation rates above the national average.

Belmopan registered 4.7 percent, followed by Orange Walk Town at 4.5 percent, Dangriga Town at 4.1 percent and Belize City at 3.9 percent. Independence recorded 3.5 percent, while Punta Gorda Town stood at 3.4 percent and Corozal Town at 3.3 percent.

San Pedro Town recorded the lowest inflation rate in July at 3.0 percent.

According to the SIB, residents there experienced below-average increases in the cost of taxi and sea fares, restaurant and café services, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and medical services.
