*Across the country, conversations about community often come up when something goes wrong. A crisis hits, a need rises, and people begin asking who is stepping in to help. The truth is that strong communities are not built in moments of urgency alone. They are shaped over time by people who stay involved, who show up, and who understand the value of civic engagement.

Asia J. Norton is one of those people and she’s hoping her example will inspire others.

With a background as a corporate real estate attorney and a graduate of Rutgers Law School, Norton understands structure, systems, and how decisions are made. She also served as President of the Newark Board of Education, where she was directly involved in shaping policies that impacted students and families. But what stands out is how she continues to stay connected to the community in a real and consistent way.

Civic engagement can take many forms. It is not limited to politics or public office. It lives in everyday actions. It shows up in organizing, volunteering, supporting families, and creating opportunities where they are needed. Norton’s work reflects that understanding.

During Ramadan, she has made it a priority to provide iftar meals for members of the Islamic community. It is a simple act with a strong impact. It brings people together, honors faith, and creates space for connection across cultures.

She has also created an annual Easter Egg Hunt that brings families together in a positive and welcoming environment. Events like this give children a chance to enjoy themselves while parents connect with neighbors and build relationships that last beyond the day.

Her Book Scholarship initiative also speaks directly to the needs of young people. For many students, the cost of books can become a barrier. By stepping in and offering support, Norton is helping students stay focused on their education without that added stress.

These efforts may seem small to some, but this is how real change happens. Civic engagement is about consistency. It is about being present and understanding what people need in real time.

Communities benefit when individuals, organizations, and local leaders stay active. Civic organizations, in particular, play a major role. They help fill gaps, provide resources, and create opportunities for people who might otherwise be overlooked. They also help build trust, which is something every community needs.

Norton believes that everyone has a role to play.

“Civic engagement starts with caring about what’s happening around you,” she says. “You don’t have to wait for a title or a position. You can serve right where you are. When people come together with that mindset, it creates real change.”

Her approach is direct and grounded. She is not waiting for permission to make an impact. She is already doing the work.

At a time when many people feel disconnected from their communities, Norton’s example is a reminder that engagement still matters. It is not about being perfect. It is about being present, being intentional, and being willing to contribute.

And when that happens, communities grow stronger from the inside out.
