Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare a.k.a. The Riddim Twins need no introduction. Producer George Phang’s Power House label was a major player in reggae though the 80s – maybe partly down to the fact he used Sly & Robbie on nearly all his recordings.

This album, with fifteen dubs/ versions, captures that decade perfectly: fragmentary vocals by the likes of Barrington Levy, Sugar Minott, Half Pint and others, over lovely bass and drum passages, as on True Love (Version), with the oh so crisp drumming holding the beat alongside the spot-on bass lines, and keyboards and guitar emphasising the rhythm from time to time, sometimes with a heavy echo, sometimes not.

It is also a surprising rootsy album – lend an ear to Roll Is Called (Version) for a dubbed up lick of the Queen Majesty riddim, and this sense of continuity in the music is sometimes overlooked when there are discussions about the digital revolution in reggae in the 80s. It is certainly well in evidence here, as is the strong sense of innovation try Soon Come (Too Late) Version, a real scorcher.

These dubs mostly offer a somewhat sparse sound, though that is part of the attraction – many dub albums can be all about the engineer, and that is more than fine, but Messrs Drumbar and Basspeare are most certainly the stars here. Whilst these are in some ways typical Sly and Robbie dubs, this very accessible set certainly demonstrates just why they have enjoyed such a monster reputation.
