Somali federal ministers in Southwest presidency race told to return to Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) Somali president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has ordered several cabinet ministers competing for the Southwest regional presidency to return to Mogadishu and resume their official duties, a move that has drawn scrutiny as similar instructions were not issued to other contenders he is believed to support.

According to local media reports, the directive targeted ministers who entered Baidoa via Burhakabo, where they were actively involved in mobilizing forces ahead of the recent push toward the city.

The ministers, however, have pushed back. They have made clear they intend to remain in Baidoa until either regional elections are held or a clear electoral framework is established, allowing them to participate fully in the contest.

The standoff has sharpened attention on the president’s preferred candidates in the race to fill the vacant Southwest presidency, a seat left open after Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagaren was toppled last week.

The situation is unfolding as President Mohamud continues his stay in Baidoa, where he has spent several days working to shape a political transition in the region. His efforts come at a delicate moment, with mounting pressure from opposition figures and some federal member states to reach a broader political consensus, including an agreed electoral timetable, or to proceed with elections as scheduled. Only a month remains in his current term.
