Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro announced that direct commercial flights between Hargeisa and Tel Aviv are scheduled to launch in the near future, marking a major practical step forward in deepening the breakaway region’s newly established bilateral ties with Israel. Speaking in an exclusive interview with international broadcasters this week, Irro explained that the upcoming air link is a vital strategic priority designed to ease international travel for citizens and significantly reduce Somaliland’s heavy reliance on regional transit hubs. The president noted that travelers flying into Hargeisa have long been forced to navigate indirect routes, inconvenient transit stops, and strict regulatory hurdles due to overlapping airspace jurisdictions managed by the federal government in Mogadishu.

According to the administration’s localized development plans, the direct flight route will allow international passengers to travel seamlessly through Tel Aviv before connecting straight to Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport. Hargeisa’s foreign policy planners emphasize that the expanded air network is expected to rapidly increase direct access for foreign investors, humanitarian personnel, and commercial developers while opening new avenues for tourism. Irro further indicated that the aviation corridor could serve as a logistical foundation to improve broader connectivity between Somaliland and its other primary international partners, explicitly highlighting expanding technological and democratic relationships with both Israel and Taiwan.

The high-profile aviation announcement comes as diplomatic and security relations between Somaliland and Israel expand rapidly following reports that Israel formally extended diplomatic recognition to Somaliland’s independence late last year. Since that breakthrough, delegations from both sides have held high-level discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in agricultural engineering, advanced water management, public healthcare, maritime security, and technology transfers. While President Irro described Israel as a highly valuable and reliable friend, Israeli defense officials separately revealed that the two nations had quietly maintained under-the-radar security cooperation for many years prior to going public.

Unsurprisingly, the Somali federal government has fiercely condemned the unfolding engagement, maintaining its position that any unilateral border diplomacy or foreign treaties enacted without Mogadishu’s express authorization violate Somalia’s national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Major regional bodies—including the Arab Parliament and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation—have similarly criticized the relationship, particularly following the recent opening of a Somaliland diplomatic mission in Jerusalem. Despite this intense external pressure, President Irro reiterated that Somaliland will not alter its sovereign foreign policy goals, pointing to its 35-year history of independent self-governance, independent security forces, and democratic elections since breaking away in 1991.
