Students awaiting funding from the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) are expected to receive their outstanding allowances by the end of July.
This comes after prime minister Elijah Ngurare conducted a surprise oversight visit to the fund.
The Office of the Prime Minister confirmed this on Wednesday in a statement.
During the visit, NSFAF chief accountant Eveline Anghuwo told the prime minister that the fund is processing payments at an average of 1 615 students per day as it works to clear the backlog.
She said eligible continuing students will receive back-pay covering April to July, amounting to N$9 600 per student, with priority given to non-tuition allowances.
Anghuwo said NSFAF is confident it will settle the outstanding payments once the requested allocation is received.
She added that payments for first-year and newly admitted students will only be processed after higher education institutions submit invoices confirming students’ registration and enrolment.
The statement says Ngurare’s visit was aimed at monitoring NSFAF’s daily operations.
