Coach Muhammad Athiyo has named a 28-player Lady Rugby Cranes squad, led by Angella Nanyonjo, to represent Uganda in Nairobi at the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup.
Uganda will be competing in the Performance Division of the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup against South Africa’s Springbok Women, Kenya’s Lionesses and Madagascar’s Makis from May 23 to 31.
Nanyonjo will be deputised by Doreen Sijali in the forwards, while Peace Lekuru shall lead the backs.
The squad is composed of a mixture of experienced players like Yvonne Najjuma and Christine Akello, while youngsters like Shaine Babirye will be looking to make their mark on the international stage.
In the forwards, Beth Asaba Awebwa’s growth and form in the league has been rewarded with a call-up to fill the void left by Patricia Anek, who’s in rehabilitation. Leona Acen is back after a long Injury and will be joined in the second row by Black Pearls teammate Hellen Acanit and Thunderbirds’ Proscovia Mukyala.
Babirye comes in at halfback to replace the busy Tina Akello, while Bushira Namutebi keeps her place in that department, with the experienced Juliet Nandawula.
Justin Anguchia is the other Nile Rapids to make the squad alongside winger Unity Namulala.
Vice Captain Lekuru is joined in the midfield by teammates Christine Akello and Grace Nabaggala, while Mastula Namboozo comes in for the injured Samiya Ayikoru at full back.
