The four Bedran sisters: the women behind San Ignacio Resort Hotel’s 50 years

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): As San Ignacio Resort Hotel marks its 50th anniversary, the property is honouring the family that has kept the founder’s dream alive, and in particular, the four sisters who took the reins and never let go.

Behind every great legacy are those who carry it forward, the hotel wrote in its tribute, noting that for nearly five decades the Bedran family has remained at the heart of the hotel’s story.

That story begins with Escandar Bedran and his wife, who married in September 1953 and raised seven children: Mrs. Terry B. Carter, Mrs. Nazle B. Kuylen, Mrs. Mariam B. Roberson, Mr. Abdala Bedran, Mr. Escandar Bedran, Amin Bedran and Mrs. Paulita B. Figueroa. When the patriarch, who built the hotel in 1976 after fires twice destroyed his beloved Stork Club, retired in 1996, management passed to his daughters, with his encouragement to continue the legacy of what he built.

They have done exactly that. Under the family’s stewardship, the hilltop property grew into the destination known today as the only jungle in town, keeping a Belizean family name over the door through five decades when so many local institutions changed hands or disappeared.

Fifty years on, the Bedran crest still flies over the hotel, and the founder’s daughters still carry the dream forward.
