THE GWOAT RETURNS: CLARESSA SHIELDS BRINGS CHAMPIONSHIP ENERGY TO ATLANTA

Just weeks ahead of one of the most highly anticipated fights of the summer, boxing icon Claressa “GWOAT” Shields made her way to Atlanta for an unforgettable meet and greet at Buckhead Fight Club, bringing with her the kind of energy that reminded everyone in the room exactly why she has earned the title  Greatest Woman of All Time.

The press day was filled with good energy, family, fans and plenty of championship spirit. Shields connected with supporters, answered questions from the crowd and offered an intimate glimpse into the mindset of a woman who has spent years redefining what is possible inside and far beyond the boxing ring.

The event also welcomed special guests, including rapper Papoose and Salita Promotions fighter Tito Mercado, who will also step into the ring as part of the August 15 fight card. During the Q&A, Shields took time to speak about her relationship with Atlanta and the significance of bringing major boxing moments to the city.

 “I don’t want to literally say Wakanda, but Atlanta really is the Black Mecca. I love the cities I’ve been able to bring the fights to, but I love me some Atlanta!”

For an Atlanta native, those words landed differently.

Atlanta has long represented a powerful intersection of Black culture, entertainment, entrepreneurship, music and sports. To hear one of boxing’s most accomplished champions acknowledge the city’s cultural influence was more than a compliment  it was a moment of hometown pride and assurance that Atlanta continues to hold its place on the world stage.

But perhaps the most powerful moment of the afternoon came when Shields spoke about what it means to represent an entire community.

For the GWOAT, the championships are only part of the story.

 “I’m so happy. I’m happy to be a representation to all the Black girls around the world that you can do absolutely anything in the world that you want to do. I never thought I would fight professionally, or go to the Olympics, and look at me now.”

That statement captures the heart of Shields’ legacy.

Before the belts, before the accolades, before becoming a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most decorated fighters in boxing history, there was a young girl with a dream that many people could not see yet.

Now, she stands as proof.

Her journey is bigger than records. Bigger than titles. Bigger than any single fight.

It is about representation.

It is about every young Black girl who has ever been told that a particular space was not made for her. Every girl who has looked at a champion and wondered whether she could become one herself.
