If you look at South Africa’s trade numbers, especially with fellow BRICS members China and India, it’s in deficit . Of course, deficits per se are not such a bad thing. But South Africa’s membership of the BRICS was supposed to generate tangible economic benefits for the country. It was expected to lead to FDI expansion, job growth and foreign exchange earnings. However, South Africa’s trade deficit with India and China continues to widen.
