Trevor Noah responds to xenophobic attacks, ’30 June deadline’
Trevor Noah's recent podast touched on xenophobic attacks against illegal immigrants and a deadline for them to vacate South Africa...
A clip of Trevor Noah’s recent podcast mentioning xenophobic attacks in South Africa, and how the EFF have unpopularly condemned vigilantism against illegal immigrants, has gone viral on social media.
This comes amid a spate of anti-foreigner groups that have marked 30 June as the final day for non-South Africans without paperwork to exit the country.
Trevor has spoken openly about his mixed race, in being born to a black, Xhosa mother and a white, Swiss father.
TREVOR NOAH PODCAST TOUCHES ON XENO ATTACKS, EFF STANCE
On this week’s episode of What Now? Podcast, Trevor Noah spoke to political commentator Hasan Piker about politics not only in the US, but abroad.
Trevor was joined by podcast pal Eugene Khoza, who is a regular feature on the show.
In a been posted on the X platform, Piker stated that he was an “EFF loyalist”.
Trevor then asked Eugene about what ordinary South Africans were saying about the EFF and its leader, Julius Malema.
Eugene responded: “He [Malema] lost people when he was on the side of illegal migration. He said there is one Africa.”
Euguene went on to claim that Malema’s plans to extend the EFF into other African countries had failed dismally.
He also claimed that Malema had clashed with “social movement group” March on March, who had set a deadline – 30 June – for illegal immigrants to vacate South Africa.
“He is saying they must stay”, Eugene said in reference to Malema.
Eugene’s views were rubbished by EFF MP Sinawo Thambo, who accused the Eugene of spreading misinformation about Malema.
Thambo tweeted from his X account: “Trevor Noah, who is hardly in SA, is able to clarify to his idiot friend that xenophobic attacks happen every couple or so years in SA – yet the idiot in glasses continues to attempt to portray it as something that will be the downfall of Julius Malema. Malema, who has lived through various episodes of what is happening now, has had his political capital continue to rise”
‘I DON’T ALWAYS AGREE WITH JULIUS MALEMA’
During the podcast, Trevor Noah acknowledged that xenophobic attacks by South Africans against illegal foreigners are not a new thing.
While the Soweto-born star has shied away from outright calling out vigilante groups, he has previously supported EFF leader Malema’s calls for non-violence.
In 2019, Trevor responded to a clip of Malema’s public address, who claimed that the xenophobic attitudes of many South Africans were based on Afrophobia, tribalism and criminal activity.
In the clip, Malema said at the time: “I am not going to join anyone who beats up an African person, I’m not part of that mess. I will never even support anyone who would stone a white person, it doesn’t matter the amount of disagreements we are having with them.
“It’s barbaric, it’s madness….It’s crime, and must be dealt with as such”.
Trevor Noah tweeted of the EFF CIC’s views: “I don’t always agree with Julius Malema, but this statement on xenophobic attacks in SA is perfect”.
