Twelve students receive refrigeration and air conditioning scholarships

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Twelve students have been awarded scholarships under the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Scholarship Programme administered by the Department of the Environment through its National Ozone Unit.

The recipients were formally recognized during an award ceremony held on September 16.

The scholarships support students enrolled in refrigeration and air conditioning programmes at ITVET centres in Belize City, Orange Walk and Stann Creek.

Each scholarship covers one academic year, from 2026 to 2027, and includes tuition as well as a toolbox with servicing tools and personal protective equipment.

Three of the 12 recipients are female trainees, which the Department of the Environment says is an important step in a field where women remain underrepresented.

The award ceremony was held on World Ozone Day, which marks the signing of the Montreal Protocol and highlights efforts to reduce substances that damage the ozone layer.

This year’s theme, “Global Action for a Cooler Planet,” also marks 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment.

Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai said the students represent an investment in the future of Belize’s cooling sector.

He said the training and tools will help build a profession that protects both people and the environment.

The scholarships are funded under the HCFC Phase-out Management Plan, Phase II, with support from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
