By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have detained two people in connection with the early-morning shooting of 26-year-old San Pedro fisherman John Hernandez, who was ambushed outside his residence on Sunday.
According to police, officers responded to the San Pedro Polyclinic at about 4:13 a.m. on August 16, where they found Hernandez suffering from gunshot injuries.
Investigators say Hernandez was entering his yard at around 3:50 a.m. when two men arrived outside his residence on a motorcycle. One of the men reportedly got off the motorcycle, ran toward Hernandez and fired several shots in his direction before fleeing.
Hernandez was initially taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic before being flown to Belize City for further treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police say he is now listed in stable condition.
The San Pedro Sun reported that Hernandez was wounded in the upper left shoulder and left leg and that several expended shell casings were recovered from the scene. The publication also reported an increased police presence and operations on the island following the shooting.
Hernandez is presently before the High Court in an unrelated case stemming from a July 31, 2024 incident in northern Ambergris Caye. He, Shelby Jonathan Hernandez and Hector Pop are jointly charged with one count of arson and two counts of aggravated assault after allegedly pursuing and firing at two fishermen before their boat was later set on fire. John Hernandez and Pop are presently out on bail, and the matter is scheduled to return to court on September 16 ahead of a trial expected in 2027.
Police have not announced a motive for Sunday morning’s shooting. Investigations continue.
