*What should have been a routine ride home after a Georgia State University campus tour became an uncomfortable and troubling experience for three 18-year-old women.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the passengers say their Uber driver played a sexually explicit podcast for the full 15 minutes of their Atlanta trip, laughing and making eye contact with them throughout the ride.
The audio, captured partially on one passenger’s phone, featured a woman moaning into a microphone while men questioned her about explicit sexual encounters. Tasia Mapp, the mother of one rider, was stunned by what she heard on the recording. “As a married adult, I have never even heard things this explicit like what was in that audio,” she said.
Mapp reported the incident to Atlanta police and brought it to public attention through social media, where her post prompted other Atlanta-area Uber riders to share accounts of similar encounters. She also spoke directly to the driver’s conduct, saying, “You didn’t know how old these girls were. And you assumed that it was okay to allow this to play and giggle and laugh and even make eye contact at times. That creates a sense of insecurity.”
While relieved her daughter stayed quiet during the ride, Mapp acknowledged the stakes of the situation. “I was just happy that she didn’t say anything because you don’t know what could have come from them speaking up and god forbid if she was in there by herself,” she said.
Uber investigated the complaint and told FOX 5 that it took action against the driver’s account, but did not clarify if the driver was suspended or permanently removed.
Legal analyst Kara Phillips says a criminal case is unlikely given that no physical contact occurred and non of the riders were minors. Had any of the passengers been underage, she noted, the charges filed could carry far greater legal weight.
