Uganda: Museveni’s Son ‘Upholds Father’s Legacy’

With eyes fixed at the presidency of Uganda, PLU has been viewed as racing at break-neck speed to dwarf NRM in readiness for the top office in the land. But in a surprise twist, Gen. Muhoozi said on September 8: “I thank the thousands of our great citizens who have already endorsed our campaign so far. Yesterday [September 7], over 5,200 citizens affixed their signatures to the endorsement books at one of our offices. We are determined to upholding the great legacy of President @KagutaMuseveni and achieving our development goals.” PLU launched its website on September 7 in which it hopes to capture as many endorsements as possible for Gen. Muhoozi to succeed his father upon retirement. Museveni has been in power since January 1986. It all started two days earlier on September 6 when PLU spokesman, veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda informed the public that PLU does not intend to register as a political party, but remain as a civic organization within the NRM. “I have been instructed by the chairman of PLU @mkainerugaba to inform the public that we do not intend to become a political party. We shall remain a civic organization, pressure group and social movement within NRM and we shall achieve all our goals within the NRM,” Mwenda, said on September 6. According to the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, PLU—which remains a civic organization—works closely with the NRM and it does not compete with the NRM. Although there are cries and hues of a serving military general participating in partisan politics which contravenes the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the laws governing the army in the country, Tayebwa maintains “This is an organized, lawful and nationwide expression of confidence in a leader who has already dedicated his life to the defense and development of our country”. Tayebwa continues: “I made it clear that PLU is not a political party. It is a civic organization that welcomes every Ugandan who believes in patriotism, service, and a sovereign, prosperous Pearl of Africa.” Former and now-late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called Uganda the ‘Pearl of Africa’; thanks to the East African country’s natural beauty and majestic endowments. “PLU works closely with the National Resistance Movement. It does not compete with the NRM; it complements it. The NRM remains our political home, while PLU provides a civic platform to organize citizens, especially young people, around patriotism, national service, and the defense of Uganda’s gains. The NRM remains our political home,” said Tayebwa on September 7, “while PLU provides a civic platform to organize citizens, especially young people, around patriotism, national service, and the defense of Uganda’s gains strengthen PLU as a civic organization and promote the values of patriotism, service, and national development.” Tayebwa had “joined several dignitaries and Patriots @PLUsecretariat where we launched a civic endorsement of Gen. @mkainerugaba as our country’s president come 2031. This is our own choice as citizens to call upon him to accept our request for him to lead us once the father of the nation @KagutaMuseveni retires.” The event was attended by Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior citizens, representatives of the business community and other patriotic Ugandans, according to Tayebwa. PLU’s General Secretary Twalla Fadil said in a statement that Ugandans who cannot access physical endorsement centres can now do it on line by logging into the website. “On this website,” Fadil said on September 7, “Ugandans and our PLU supporters can also register as PLU members and get unique identification numbers, report corruption, follow our PLU active and verify any information they would want to know from PLU with just a click.” Local Government Minister, a PLU member and a dripping promoter of Gen. Muhoozi, Balaam Barugahara celebrated the website launch as “a historic moment for the PLU and an important statement about the future leadership of our country…we made history by endorsing our leader and Chairman Gen @mkainerugaba to lead Uganda as President once H.E. President @KagutaMuseveni retires. “We also launched membership registration online. I sincerely thank the over 150 Members of Parliament and more than 10 Ministers who attended this historic ceremony at the PLU Headquarters in Naguru [a capital city, Kampala suburb],” bragged Balaam on September 7.
