Uganda’s Rugby Cranes 7s team good enough to conquer Africa

Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s management named a strong 13-man squad to compete at the Africa Men’s 7s.

The coaching set-up headed by Allan Otim began preparations as far back as February with over 20 players, but it has now come down to 13.

With the Africa Men’s 7s split into two competitions, Uganda will be competing for a ticket to the HSBC Division III without having to worry about continental powerhouses like Kenya and South Africa.

This current Uganda side boasts a three-time African champion in Denis Etwau, and five two-time winners of the trophy they are going to be competing for this Saturday and Sunday at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.

This wealth of experience has been boosted by some exciting talents that have pulled on the Uganda shirt before, but not at the African Men’s 7s level.

Players like Allan Olango, Shakim Ssembusi, Daniels Otim and Ivan Bulima have been very exciting to watch on the local scene, but now they get the rare opportunity to showcase their abilities on the continental scene, on home soil.

Roy Kizito and Desire Ayera make a return to the squad, having missed out on a few outings with the National 7s team.

All eyes will be on speedster Daniels  Otim as he announces himself on the African scene. He has the advantage of playing at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, a place he calls home and where he trains and plays his rugby for the Buffaloes RFC.

Uganda’s journey to qualification begins on Saturday at 1:06 p.m. when the Rugby Cranes 7s take to the pitch to take on Senegal.
