Through her organizations, L.A. Global Care and Ms. Hazel’s House, Hamilton has created a community-based model that offers more than temporary relief. Her approach focuses on restoring dignity, building trust, and helping individuals take meaningful steps toward independence.

A Crisis Still Growing Across Los Angeles

On any given night, more than 66,000 people are experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County, a number that has steadily increased over the past decade due to rising housing costs, economic instability, and gaps in mental health and social services.

“To us, a shelter is more than four walls,” one coordinator explained. “It’s a place where people can begin to feel like themselves again.”

For Maria Hernandez, a single mother who fled an abusive relationship, arriving at Ms. Hazel’s House marked a turning point.

“When I got there, I had nothing but my daughter and a suitcase,” she said. “They gave us more than shelter—they gave us hope.”

With support from L.A. Global Care’s job readiness programs, Hernandez secured employment and eventually moved into stable housing. Today, she returns as a volunteer, mentoring others navigating similar challenges.

“We can’t shelter our way out of homelessness alone,” the organization notes. “It requires a larger commitment from the entire community.”
