A Windhoek man has been sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment after he was caught cutting and stealing copper cables at Suiderhof on 8 February.
Mondestus Joseph (31) was arrested and appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on 10 February, where he pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced.
Windhoek City Police spokesperson Marcelline Murapo on Monday said Joseph was found cutting copper wire on Springbok Street at Suiderhof.
After the arrest, he was profiled and detained at the Windhoek Police Station.
“Our patrol officers apprehended him while he was found unlawfully cutting and collecting copper wires. A second suspect is still at large,” she said.
The police in a statement on Saturday say further investigations revealed that a number of scrapyards across Windhoek are suspected of buying stolen copper, providing an easy market that fuels ongoing cable theft.
The police urged the public to report such activities.
“Failure to comply will result in prosecution and closure of illegal business operations,” the police say.
