*YouTube has handed users a new level of control over what they see on the platform. A recent update now makes it possible to shut off the Shorts feed entirely, with a zero-minute daily limit that wipes short-form video from the mobile experience altogether. Cord Cutters confirmed the setting is now available to all users worldwide.
The road to this update started in late 2025, when YouTube introduced a Shorts timer that gave users the ability to cap their daily intake anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. When the chosen window closed, the feed would stop and prompt a reminder to step away. It was a starting point — designed to nudge viewers toward more intentional habits rather than cut access off completely.
YouTube took the next step in early 2026 by folding stronger restrictions into its parental controls, giving parents and guardians a way to fully block Shorts on accounts belonging to younger users. The zero-minute option arriving for all users now brings that same capability to everyone, regardless of account type, on both Android and iOS.
Switching it on removes the Shorts tab from view and keeps short clips from surfacing prominently across the home screen. Users who have activated the setting will see a notification letting them know the feed is off for the day, with access returning when the next daily window begins. The change takes effect right away and can be found within the time management section of the app’s settings menu.
The update lands as the conversation around infinite scrolling and its effects on focus, sleep, and overall wellbeing continues to grow. YouTube Shorts drew massive viewership after launching as a direct answer to TikTok, but the format has also faced pushback for driving compulsive use. By putting this level of control directly in users’ hands, YouTube is signaling that digital wellness is now a priority.
