ARUSHA: 2,848 women have benefited from cervical and breast cancer screening services during a five-day outreach campaign conducted in Arusha District Council.

The campaign was jointly coordinated by the Arusha District Council Medical Office and the Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania through the Integrated Women’s Cancer Project in East Africa.

The initiative, which initially aimed to reach 2,200 women using mobile clinics across 15 villages and locations in the district, surpassed its target by reaching 2,848 women.

Speaking to media outlets about the achievements and challenges of the campaign, Dr Sarah Maongezi, the Chief Coordinator of the Integrated Women’s Cancer Project in East Africa, said the campaign focused on reaching women from different groups including secondary school students, market traders, farmers, and pastoralists within Arusha District Council

“We exceeded our initial target of reaching 2,200 women and managed to reach 2,848 women. Out of these, 2,519 women underwent cervical cancer screening while 329 received breast cancer screening services,” she said.

The Integrated Women’s Cancer Project in East Africa is a regional initiative jointly implemented by Aga Khan Health Services in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan University, and Curie Institute of France. The project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), the Gates Foundation, and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
