From digital basics to building their first Python projects, 5FM is making coding less scary and a lot more hands-on for young people who want to try something new.
Johannesburg, South Africa (14 May 2026) – Youth Month is getting a digital upgrade this year as 5FM steps beyond airwaves and into classrooms of the future with a hands-on coding initiative aimed at young South Africans.
In partnership with WeThinkCode_, the station’s new Code Youth programme is designed to give beginners a practical introduction to coding, digital literacy, and problem-solving skills, all completely free.
The bootcamps will run across three cities, and the goal is to take young people from zero experience to building their own basic digital projects in just a few hours.
From writing their first lines of code to creating small interactive games, participants will get a real feel for what it’s like to think like a developer.
5FM Business Manager Masi Mdingane says the initiative is part of the station’s wider purpose beyond entertainment.
“5FM has always been about youth culture and connection, but it’s also about purpose. We want to empower young South Africans with real skills that open doors.”
The experience is peer-led by tech students, with a strong focus on learning by doing rather than theory-heavy lessons.
Entry is free but limited, and organisers say demand has been high as the programme targets young people between 18 and 25 who want to build confidence in the digital space or explore tech for the first time.
Interested participants can secure a spot via the 5FM App, with updates available across 5FM’s digital platforms.
