WEST Vancouver Police have announced that a newly funded crime-reduction initiative, beginning Friday night, will provide additional policing support throughout the summer in West Vancouver

Police said that on Thursday, June 18, starting at approximately 10 p.m., a large group of youth from multiple high schools across the North Shore gathered in Ambleside. While many participants were peaceful, there were several incidents of destructive and dangerous behaviour, open alcohol consumption, vandalism, and excessive littering.

As the number of attendees swelled to approximately 1,500 youth, putting public safety at risk, an ‘unlawful assembly’ was declared near 1 a.m. on Friday, and West Vancouver Police officers advised the group to disperse. Over the next several hours, police cleared the Ambleside beach and business areas and remained on scene to deal with remaining participants until 5 a.m. on Friday.

The West Vancouver Police Department says it is excited about Team Canada’s win and is proud of local graduates who have completed such an important milestone. It wants celebrations to remain safe and respectful, for both participants and local residents and businesses. Unsafe and illegal behaviours that impact public safety will not be tolerated.

Starting Friday night, WVPD’s Waterfront District Crime Reduction Project, funded by the Government of British Columbia through its BC PROP public safety funding programs, will provide increased police deployment in West Vancouver’s busiest areas.

Stretching from the Capilano River area to Park Royal, Ambleside, the Central Business District, Dundarave, and Horseshoe Bay, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in parks and public spaces, as well as important corridors, such as Marine Drive, the Spirit Trail, and the Centennial Seawalk.

WVPD officers will be focused on proactive deterrence, interrupting criminal activity, enforcing the law, protecting public safety, and engaging with the community.

“With school out, the World Cup underway, and a summer of festivals and public events to look forward to, WVPD is asking parents to talk to their teens about celebrating responsibly,” says Sgt. Chris Bigland. “Residents and business owners who see unsafe behaviour can reach WVPD’s non-emergency line at 604-925-7300, or call 911 if there is an immediate risk to safety”.
