APR FC produced a stunning comeback at Amahoro Stadium on Friday, overturning a first-leg deficit to sweep aside Les Aigles du Congo 3-0 and march into the first preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.

The Rwandan giants arrived home needing to erase a 1-0 defeat suffered in the Democratic Republic of Congo last weekend, and they did exactly that.

Skipper Djibril Ouattara sparked the turnaround in the 33rd minute, finishing to put APR ahead and level the tie on aggregate. The hosts went into the interval with their advantage intact, but the job was not done.

Christian Ishimwe struck after 58 minutes to make it 2-0 on the night and put APR 2-1 ahead on aggregate. At the hour mark, Hakim Kiwanuka entered the game in place of Amani Uwiringiyimana with APR firmly in control as the home side turned the screw.

Ouattara then delivered the final blow from the penalty spot after 75 minutes, completing his brace and sealing a 3-0 victory.

APR therefore completed a 3-1 aggregate comeback to eject Les Aigles du Congo from the competition and keep their continental campaign alive.

The victory was a sharp response to their first leg setback, when Soze Zemanga’s goal handed the DR Congo side a narrow advantage in Lubumbashi.

APR now await the winner between AS Port of Djibouti and former champions Zamalek of Egypt in the second preliminary round. Zamalek hold a 2-1 advantage heading into Saturday’s return leg in Cairo.

The CECAFA Zone remains heavily involved as the preliminary rounds continue on Saturday as Al Hilal SC of Sudan, holding a 2-0 advantage, host Burundi’s Angie Noir FC at Amahoro Stadium, while Young Africans SC of Tanzania entertain Gaborone United FC of Botswana at the Azam Complex. South Sudan’s El Merriekh SC Bentiu, leading 1-0, face Heegan FC of Somalia, while Al Merrikh SC of Sudan travel to Zambia to meet Power Dynamos FC.

On Sunday, Zanzibar’s KVZ FC visit Swehly FC in Libya, Vipers SC of Uganda face FC Nouadhibou in Mauritania, Gor Mahia FC of Kenya take on Pyramids FC in Egypt, while Simba SC of Tanzania host Mighty Wanderers FC.
