Bayahíbe has become one of the Dominican Republic’s defining Caribbean destinations, a place where fishing boats share the waterfront with dive operators, all-inclusive resorts and ferries bound for Saona Island.
Now, the destination is taking a new step toward shaping how it grows.
The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism has joined with local community leaders, hotel representatives and business owners to establish a permanent working group focused on Bayahíbe’s long-term development, creating an ongoing forum to coordinate planning, tourism management and sustainability initiatives.
The initiative is designed to bring together the destination’s principal public, private and community stakeholders as Bayahíbe continues to attract visitors, with a shared focus on keeping future tourism growth organized and sustainable.
A Shared Vision for Bayahíbe
Officials said the permanent working group will serve as a platform for planning, coordination and follow-up on projects affecting the destination.
Among the priorities are the reorganization of tourism areas, improved destination management, a stronger image for Bayahíbe and the protection of the natural, cultural and economic resources that have helped turn the community into one of the Dominican Republic’s leading tourism centers.
Participants also emphasized balancing continued tourism investment with quality of life for local residents, while supporting the destination’s long-term competitiveness.
The Ministry of Tourism described Bayahíbe as one of the country’s most strategically important destinations, citing its varied tourism offering, its proximity to major natural attractions and its longstanding hospitality sector.
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local efforts designed to strengthen destination management and raise Bayahíbe’s profile in national and international markets.
Keeping Tourism Growth Organized
Representatives from the local hotel sector and business community welcomed the creation of the permanent working group, saying it will provide a mechanism for developing proposals, identifying shared solutions and monitoring progress on important projects.
The agenda includes improving the organization of tourism zones, upgrading the destination’s urban image, coordinating promotional initiatives, strengthening security, improving service quality and protecting the surrounding natural environment.
The group will also examine ways to organize commercial activity, improve the visitor experience and preserve the identity of Bayahíbe as tourism continues to expand.
Members said the strength of the destination lies in its people, natural resources and the ability of its public and private sectors to work toward a common vision.
The permanent group is expected to meet regularly and advance a shared agenda involving government officials, hotel representatives, merchants and community organizations.
The Gateway to Saona Island
Located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahíbe has grown from a small fishing village into one of the country’s most important resort and excursion destinations.
The community is the primary gateway to Saona Island, one of the Dominican Republic’s most visited natural attractions and a centerpiece of Cotubanamá National Park.
Boats depart daily from Bayahíbe for Saona’s white-sand beaches, shallow turquoise water and protected natural areas, making the village an essential part of the country’s broader tourism economy.
Bayahíbe has also developed into one of the Caribbean’s leading diving destinations, with coral reefs, underwater caves and shipwreck sites drawing divers throughout the year.
You’ll find beachfront resorts, smaller hotels, restaurants, dive shops and excursion operators across the area, along with the working waterfront that remains central to the community’s character.
A Major Dominican Republic Resort Area
Bayahíbe’s tourism offering extends beyond the village itself.
The nearby Dominicus resort area is home to a large collection of beachfront hotels and all-inclusive resorts, giving visitors direct entry to some of the clearest water and most popular beaches on the country’s Caribbean coast.
Its location also places Bayahíbe within easy reach of La Romana, Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavón and the beaches and protected landscapes of the southeastern Dominican Republic.
The working group will seek to coordinate development across the destination while protecting the natural setting that remains central to Bayahíbe’s appeal.
Officials said the goal is to strengthen Bayahíbe as an organized, competitive and sustainable tourism destination, while ensuring future development creates opportunities for local residents.
As tourism continues to expand across the Dominican Republic, the permanent group gives Bayahíbe a formal forum for managing its next stage of growth.
Government officials, hotel operators, merchants and community representatives will now be working from a common agenda, with Saona Island, Cotubanamá National Park, the local waterfront and the wider Bayahíbe tourism economy all part of the discussion.
