HAMILTON, CMC – The Bermuda government Friday confirmed that a threat had been made at the Westgate Correctional Facility, adding that “the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness”.
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice gave no details except to state that a “threatening telephone call” was received on Thursday.
“The threat relates to the safety of staff at the facility. The matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness and was immediately reported to the Bermuda Police Service. A formal statement has also been provided to assist with the Police investigation,” the ministry said.
It said that in response to the incident, “appropriate precautionary measures have been put in place at the facility”.
A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections said the safety and well-being of correctional officers, staff, inmates and all persons at the facility remains a priority.
“As this is now a Police matter, no further details will be provided at this time,” the Justice Ministry said.
