Three tiny genets have landed in the best possible hands!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (22 May 2026) – Good news sometimes comes in spots.

A trio of incredibly adorable, four-week-old Large-Spotted Genet kittens has kick-started their rehabilitation journey, thanks to a quick hand-off between local animal welfare teams.

The three siblings were recently left at the Pietermaritzburg SPCA. Their backstory remains a mystery, but the team knew just the experts to call to give these indigenous nocturnal animals their best shot at survival. They were quickly transferred into the specialised, safe hands of FreeMe Wildlife.

Only a month old, these little kits are turning into curious little climbers. Their eyes are wide and bright, and their large ears twitch at every sound. They are still exceptionally vulnerable, though. In the wild, they would be tucked away in a den, very much dependent on their mother. For now, FreeMe is filling that vital role with regular milk feeds and a warm, safe environment.

“During this stage, they would naturally still be learning important survival skills from their mother, including climbing, hunting, and navigating their environment safely,” shares FreeMe.

Telling South Africa’s two common genet species apart can be tricky if you don’t know the trick! While they look similar to their Small-Spotted Genet cousins, the secret lies at the end of their tails. Small-Spotted Genets sport a pale tail tip, whereas these three proudly display the characteristic black tip of the Large-Spotted Genet.

Growing up takes time. They won’t show interest in solid foods until they’re about five weeks old, and are only fully weaned by ten weeks. Without a mom to teach them how to navigate the canopy and hunt, FreeMe will guide them through these milestones in an environment designed to keep them totally wild.

“For now, these three siblings spend their days curled up together, climbing over one another, and staring at the world with curious little faces. In time, those tiny paws and playful personalities will grow into agile, nocturnal hunters perfectly adapted to life in the wild.”
