Listeners, colleagues, friends and public figures are honouring the life of Lorenzo Darries, whose journey through radio, television and personal hardship touched thousands across South Africa.
Western Cape, South Africa (07 May 2026) – From the mayor and broadcasters to former classmates and listeners who had never met him personally, the same words kept appearing again and again: kind, gentle and genuine. Lorenzo Darries clearly left his mark on Cape Town, not only through his work on radio and television, but through the way he treated people around him.
Good Hope FM confirmed the heartbreaking news that Lorenzo has passed away following a courageous battle with heart disease. According to his family, he suffered a stroke on the 4th of May before passing away in hospital the following day.
The loss has sent waves of sadness through the broadcasting industry, across Cape Town and throughout the communities who knew him not just as a presenter but as a genuinely kind human being.
“It’s impossible to overstate the impression that Lorenzo left on the hearts and lives of those who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him. As Cape Town’s Original, Good Hope FM honours his legacy with deep respect and immense gratitude. He gave his talent, his time, and his being to this station and to the city he loved,” Good Hope FM’s Business Manager, Masi Mdingane, said in a press statement.
Good Things Guy first shared Lorenzo’s story in 2025, when South Africans rallied around him during one of the toughest chapters of his life. After opening up about his health struggles, people from all corners of the country stepped in to help raise more than R70,000 towards his medical costs. Lorenzo’s story touched hearts because he shared it honestly, bravely and with gratitude, even while facing enormous challenges.

Born and raised on the Cape Flats, growing up in areas like Lavender Hill, Mitchells Plain and Retreat, Lorenzo carried Cape Town with him everywhere he went. He was proudly local, proudly passionate about sport and proudly connected to the people around him.
While studying an Accounting Programme at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2019, he discovered radio through campus broadcasting. That journey led him to enter the Good Hope FM Campus DJ Search. Although he didn’t make it to the final stages, the station saw something special in him almost immediately. The following year, Good Hope FM called him back and officially welcomed him into the family in February 2020. From there, Lorenzo became a trusted and much-loved voice on programmes like Weekend Sports WarmUp, Play-By-Play and later The Great Drive with Kyeezi and Celest Anthony. Whether he was talking sport, sharing stories or simply bringing warmth to the airwaves, listeners connected with him instantly because what you heard was real. His career also extended beyond radio into television, where he worked as a producer for Expresso on S3. Colleagues say the same energy followed him everywhere: professionalism, humour, compassion and a willingness to support others whenever needed.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring parts of Lorenzo’s story was the openness with which he spoke about his health journey. He shared his battle with heart disease publicly, hoping his honesty might help someone else feel less alone. Even during difficult days, he remained hopeful and deeply faithful, often speaking proudly about what he called his “iron heart”.
Tributes have continued pouring in online from colleagues, friends, listeners and people whose lives crossed paths with his.
