*The fallout from Netflix’s “The Roast of Kevin Hart” continues to grow. Now, Terrence Floyd — one of George Floyd’s brothers — has publicly criticized Kevin Hart for not shutting down a controversial joke about his brother during the livestreamed event.

The joke in question came from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who referenced George Floyd’s death with a line about Floyd “looking up at us all, laughing so hard he can’t breathe.” The reference to Floyd’s final moments — being unable to breathe under a police officer’s knee — was immediately condemned as deeply tasteless by many viewers. But for the Floyd family, the pain was personal and profound.

“He Should Have Brought That Same Energy”

In interviews following the roast, including conversations with Loren LoRosa on “The Latest” and on “The Breakfast Club,” Terrence Floyd did not hold back. He said Kevin Hart should have stopped the joke immediately the moment it left Hinchcliffe’s mouth.

Terrence specifically invoked the 2022 Oscars, where Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. He wanted Hart to bring that same protective “screw you” energy — to physically intervene or shut down the bit out of respect for George Floyd’s memory and the family’s grief.

Terrence described the joke as “tasteless” and said it deeply hurt the family, especially George’s daughter, Gianna. He noted that Kevin Hart had attended George Floyd’s funeral, which made the moment even more painful. For Terrence, Hart’s presence at the funeral represented solidarity and compassion. His silence during the joke felt like a betrayal.

“You was at the funeral,” Terrence said in effect. “You know what this family went through. How do you just sit there?”

Blame Beyond Hart: Netflix and Producers Also Targeted

Terrence Floyd did not stop with Kevin Hart. He also blamed Netflix and the roast’s producers for allowing the joke to be written, rehearsed, and ultimately aired to a global audience. In his view, multiple layers of oversight failed to recognize that some subjects — especially the public murder of a Black man that sparked worldwide protests — should be off limits, even in a roast setting.

This criticism adds to ongoing fallout from the roast, which also featured Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson using the r-word in a joke aimed at Draymond Green. Other comedians made edgy references to dead spouses, Jeffrey Epstein, and other sensitive topics. But the George Floyd joke has generated the most intense backlash, with other voices — including comedian Lil Rel Howery, activists, and parts of the Floyd family network — also condemning it.

Roast Comedy Boundaries: Where Is the Line?

The controversy has reignited a long-running debate about roast comedy boundaries. Defenders of the format, including Sheryl Underwood, argue that roast comedy follows different rules. It is theatrical, not literal. Participants know what they signed up for, and over-sensitivity kills the art form.

But critics argue that fame and Netflix distribution remove any “private room” protection. Some traumas — particularly George Floyd’s death, which became a global flashpoint for racial justice — are too painful for casual roasting. Comedians still have a responsibility not to cause real harm, especially when the victim’s family is still grieving and the victim’s child must grow up hearing jokes about her father’s death.

The best roasts walk right up to the line without crossing it. They sting, but they ultimately celebrate. The 2026 Kevin Hart roast proved that even in this era, the audience — and the internet — decides where that line sits. What feels like “pushing boundaries” to some feels like punching down on real pain to others.

Kevin Hart Responds — But Not How Critics Hoped

Kevin Hart has now broken his silence. In a video posted on social media, Hart responded alongside comedian Lil Rel Howery to the backlash over Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd joke.

However, Hart’s response is not an apology. It is not a condemnation of the joke. And it certainly does not match the “storm the stage” energy that Terrence Floyd demanded.

Instead, Hart said that all the comedians — and Tony Hinchcliffe in particular — “understood the assignment.” He praised the roasters for doing exactly what they were brought on stage to do: push boundaries, insult the honoree, and go for shock laughs. In Hart’s view, the roast worked as intended.

Lil Rel Howery, who stood beside Hart in the video, has publicly condemned the joke elsewhere. But in this video, the two men presented a unified front: the roast happened, the jokes were part of the format, and the comics delivered.

So, Is He Responding to the Criticism?

The short answer is not really, or at least not directly.

Hart acknowledges the controversy exists. He is speaking publicly about it. But he does not apologize to the Floyd family. He does not say the joke should have been cut. He does not say he should have intervened. Instead, he defends the process and the performers.

His response can be taken two ways:

  1. As a defense of roast comedy: Hart is standing by the art form and the professionals he hired. He is saying, “This is what a roast is. Tony did his job. Don’t blame him for doing what he was asked to do.”

  2. As a deflection of responsibility: Critics — including Terrence Floyd — will hear this as Hart sidestepping his role as the host and honoree. He had the power to stop the joke, walk off stage, or demand it be removed from the final edit. He did none of those things. Praising Hinchcliffe for “understanding the assignment” reads as an endorsement of the joke itself.

Where Does This Leave the Controversy?

Terrence Floyd wanted Kevin Hart to bring “screw you” energy — to physically or vocally shut down the joke in the moment, the way Will Smith did at the Oscars. Instead, Hart sat through it, laughed along (or at least did not object), and later praised the comedian who told it.

For the Floyd family, this response will likely feel like a betrayal layered on top of the original insult. Hart attended George Floyd’s funeral. He knows the family’s pain. And now, when asked to stand with them, he has chosen to stand with the roast instead.

Netflix has still not commented on the backlash or indicated any plans to edit the special. The story continues to develop.
