Nicky Chovuchovu is Running His 1st Comrades For HACT

Running the Comrades Marathon was never on Nicky Chovuchovu’s bucket list. But after a volunteering shift at HACT, he is now taking on the ultimate human race to bring hope, awareness, and vital funds to those who need it most.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (29 May 2026) – If you had told Nicky Chovuchovu a while back that he would be running his first Comrades Marathon, he probably would have laughed or shaken his head in disbelief.

However, after volunteering at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT), he witnessed the strength, hope, and love the organisation gives to people who have so little, and he was inspired to do something bold to support it.

Founded in 1990, HACT is dedicated to saving and transforming lives. As one of the first NGO’s in South Africa to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it has established a reputation for making a significant and meaningful impact in the lives of people impacted by the disease.

While the organisation’s work and services continue to grow throughout KwaZulu-Natal, it primarily focuses on serving the semi-rural and disadvantaged communities of the Valley of 1000 Hills region. Services include HIV Prevention and Education, comprehensive healthcare services, Support and Family Strengthening, as well as economic empowerment projects, which help create brighter futures for impacted families and communities through practical skills development and training opportunities.

“I saw lives being touched in quiet, powerful ways, families finding comfort, people finding courage to keep going,” says Nikcy, reflecting on his volunteering experience.

“That experience changed me. It reminded me that every act of compassion matters.”

Not one to have ever considered himself much of a runner, he chose to try something new for a cause greater than himself.

Nicky has officially qualified for the ‘ultimate human race’, and this June, he will be taking the starting line for every person who needs and believes in hope.

“Each step I take will be for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust and the incredible work they do in our community.”

If you’d like to be part of Nicky’s journey and make every kilometre count, consider donating to his charity run here.
