Videos across social media captured Capetonians running alongside Eliud Kipchoge ahead (and during) of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, and the excitement has been impossible to miss.
Cape Town, South Africa (25 May 2026) – There are marathon weekends, and then there are moments that feel much bigger than the race itself.
That was the feeling across Cape Town this past week as runners and fans got the rare chance to run alongside marathon icon Eliud Kipchoge ahead (and during) of the 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.
From the community outreach to race build-up events, social media has been flooded with videos of Capetonians completely starstruck by the arrival of the Kenyan legend. And who can blame them?
After all, this is the man who became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours, a two-time Olympic champion and one of the greatest distance runners the sport has ever seen.
What stood out most this week was how connected Kipchoge remained to everyday runners.
One of the most touching moments came from a video posted online showing a woman enthusiastically shouting words of encouragement while Kipchoge ran past. She captioned it “WHAT AN HONOUR! WHAT A MAN! WHAT A PRIVILEGE TO WITNESS HIM ON AFRICAN SOIL!!!!
THANK YOU FOR FLYING THE AFRICA FLAG SO HIGH KIPCHOGE! ”
Later, after the clip made its way onto Instagram, Kipchoge personally commented to thank her for the support.
Before race day, a couple of South Africans got to run alongside him.
One runner wrote: “I forgot to breathe. I ran with @kipchogeeliud and he said ‘Let’s move.’”
Another posted: “This is so surreal. You get to meet your inspiration.”
Others simply celebrated the significance of seeing an African sporting icon running on South African soil.
“approved my “I’m a runner” status this morning on the prom. So cool bumping into the GOAT and running alongside him for all of 30secs haha legend!”
The event has attracted thousands of runners across multiple races this weekend, including the 10km Peace Run where South African stars Maxime Chaumeton and Tayla Kavanagh both broke course records in stunning fashion.
But while records continue to fall, for many Cape Town runners, simply sharing space with Kipchoge has already become one of the most memorable moments of the entire marathon weekend.
