*NBA veteran Chris Paul is headed to Atlanta with a different kind of assist on his agenda. Paul will serve as the commencement speaker at Morehouse College’s 142nd graduation ceremony, scheduled for May 17, 2026, at 9 a.m. on the Century Campus. The Class of 2026 will be recognized alongside alumni marking milestone reunions.

Paul will also receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the event, according to HBCU Gameday. The honor reflects a career that stretches well beyond the basketball court, encompassing 12 NBA All-Star selections, two Olympic appearances, and an active commitment to philanthropy and entrepreneurship. He completed his own academic chapter in December 2022, earning a communications degree from Winston-Salem State University.

His investment in HBCU culture has taken shape through two signature initiatives. The Chris Paul HBCU Classic is a multi-team early-season showcase that has been held in cities including Charlotte and Atlanta, as well as within the CIAA Tournament environment. He also founded the CP3 Classic, a three-day AAU event designed to connect top high school prospects directly with HBCU coaching staffs and recruiting pipelines.

Paul spoke to the significance of the invitation in a statement released by the college. “It is a profound honor and privilege to speak at Morehouse College’s Commencement this year. I have a deep respect for Morehouse’s legacy and impact on our community, especially on generations of young Black men. To follow in the footsteps of previous speakers who were presidents, civil activists, and learned shows that greatness is not defined solely by performance, but by character, consistency, and commitment to one’s community.”

He added, “My hope is to encourage the Class of 2026 to carry these principles forward as they enter the next chapter of their lives.”

Two additional honorees round out the ceremony’s recognition. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., founding dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, will receive an honorary degree and be formally recognized as a “Morehouse Man” as he retires after 47 years of service — having been recruited by Martin Luther King Jr. himself at age 10. Chris Womack of Southern Company will also be honored for spearheading a $50 million initiative that expanded HBCU access to scholarships, leadership development, and technology across multiple states.
